All In The Game Yo, All In The Game

This lad is my favourite character so far in The Wire. I'm two episodes in to season 3.

Clint Mansell

Makes some beautiful music.

For Your Appreciation, If Not Enjoyment...Roger

Ok, I'm pretty sure I dedicated a post to dubstep before here goes. I was going to make a playlist but my internet is too slow and I'm impatient.

I was going to write a brief history and 101 on the subject but a load of videos will have to do. Just check out Mary Anne Hobbes, she's done more for experimental and leftfield electronic music than probably any DJ.

First and foremost, and I must admit, an acquired taste for me is Burial. His self titled is one of the best electronic albums I've heard and he certainly paved the way for many if not all dubstep after 2006.

Another name that's eponymous with dubstep is Skream. This lad is well capable of dropping heavy bass lines but also has a lot of lightheartedness in his music, sometimes this comes across as a little obnoxious but trust me, Skream is far more worthy a listen than many others of his ilk. Unlike Burial, this is a more dancehall take of the genre, I love partying to this stuff.

Kode9 was one of the best DJ sets I've seen in a long time, this is intelligent music. Surely intelligent dubstep is an oxymoron you protest. Steve Goodman aka Kode9 has a book called Sonic Warfare. Read about it, I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I have to drop this song in again, I have been obsessed with this song by Limerick producer The Optimist for well over a year, maybe even 2 now. I can't stress enough the need to listen to this music with a sub or good headphones.

Any old school Sega gamers should get a little tingly sensation when they hear the sample after the intro. I love Reso.

I think one or two may be in order. I came across an album called Cyclical by Ital Tek. This is more in step with the Burial approach, I enjoy this album immensely.

The last song I'm going to post is by another pioneer in a different way. This is Benga, and Benga is good. This is an N-Type remix from Dubstep Allstars Vol. 5

There is so much I've left out but I wanted to give you a taste of older and newer, more underground and more mainstream. There's so much that falls under the dubstep umbrella, it'd be a shame not to try some of it out.

Bersarin Quartett

This is a lad I started listening to when I wanted ambient stuff to fall asleep to. The album is much nicer than a standard sleep backing track.

It's on this label here and it's self titled.

Oh yeah, it's only one lad making all the music, must be a lovely fella!

Music

This is the first Tom Waits song my Dad showed me as a kid. I never forgot it. How could you?

Some more genius.

A different genius.

Could have sworn there was a version on Weld, turns out it's Rust.

A different kind of genius altogether.

Pop music at it's best.

Music makes me feel absolutely fine.

BULLSHIT

Another of those sleepless nights,
Has me counting days.
The days before,
Oh, there was more,
Than what I see as blight.

And what was there,
My dearest friend?
What do I have to show?

You're not there,
You never were.
You never were.
You never were.

This Song

I posted briefly about this song a few posts ago but I just want to put it here by itself so it gets the chance it deserves. The video is nothing to do with An Explorer, just listen to the music.

I hope somebody else is as moved by this as I am. It really does it for me, maybe for obvious reasons, more than most things.

You can download his stuff here.

This song will be with me for a long time.

Artwork

This is the artwork we've decided to use for our E.P. I'm really happy with it and we have Jan Campbell to thank for it. Check out her blog, her stuff is great.

We still need to finish up the E.P. Dave is a dick. (He's sitting right beside me.)

Here I am, plugging again. Our blog is up here. There's not much there but there will be.

I really can't wait until the lads exams are over, I'm incredibly excited to be playing so much music again. We're probably going to release this as a download and try get a run of cd's if we can afford it.

In other news, we may be doing a split 7" with another band, I'll know a lot more details tomorrow.

Yay

This is basically every picture I took from the 21st of April until today (26th). I left my good camera at home and all I had was my phone, it served me as well as it could, soldiered on through the dark and too bright.

This is everything I came home with that I didn't have on the way over.
